Instructions Before Surgery

 

Food and Water

Please withhold food after 10 PM the night before surgery.  Do not feed the morning of the surgery.  Allow your pet to drink water as normal.

 

If the animal is 3-6 months of age:

Puppies and kittens between 3-6 months of age should be given 1/4 the usual amount of food the morning of their surgery.  There is no need to withhold food the night before the surgery. 

 

Animals "In Heat"

Cats can be spayed when they are in heat.  There is no additional charge. 

Female dogs will not be accepted for surgery when they are in heat.  They must wait until their heat cycle is over to undergo spaying.

 

Nursing Animals

Lactating animals must not nurse for at least 2 weeks before the day of their surgery.  Their puppies and kittens should be between 6 and 8 weeks of age and eating and drinking on their own. 

 

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm prevention can be administed as normal regardless of the surgery date.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Flea Prevention

Flea products such as Advantage, Advantix, Frontline and Revolution are safe to apply before and after surgery.  Over the counter flea products should be avoided and should NOT be applied to pets 2 weeks before the day of surgery.

 

Pregnant Animals

Dogs and cats may be spayed while pregant to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens.  The veterinarian must consider the stage of the pregnancy before deciding whether she can be spayed.
